The existing College of Music building, built in the late 1920s, was a confusing set of corridors, multiple level changes and small dark rooms. The main auditorium had acoustical and mechanical problems and the only restrooms were on a sub-basement level. The challenge of the project was to renovate the auditorium itself into a state-of-the-art recital hall and create a new "center" for the building – one that set up clear circulation through the building and provided space for student interaction. Part of the auditorium conversion to a recital hall was accomplished by actually raising the ceiling and roof by fifteen feet. Student activity areas, vertical circulation and restrooms were included in an addition.
