Although deeply rooted in tradition and rich in history, Berea College is also one of the most progressive privately owned colleges in Kentucky. When the college determined a need for a new student center, the decision was made to perform an adaptive renovation of the 20,000 s.f. Woods-Penniman building and portions of the adjacent Fairchild and Alumni buildings.

The renovation allows for spaces that are occupied by a variety of student service organizations, student clubs and related groups. The space also houses the Campus Post Office, a museum/gallery, snack bar and other common use spaces. Incorporated into the generally open design concept is the need to create space that will promote integration and collaboration between various building users.

The project also includes the addition of an elevator along with other ADA accessibility improvements. All new mechanical, electrical, fire protection and communications systems were included as well.
